Target Base Salary: $60,000-70,000 (DOE)

Position Description

The EHS Specialist owns the day-to-day discipline of occupational health and safety across approximately 6–7 Somafina manufacturing locations in Lindon and Layton, Utah, reporting to the Director of Human Resources. This role spends substantial time in the facilities and on the manufacturing floor — identifying hazards, driving corrective actions, and building safety culture through direct relationships with plant leadership and employees.

This is an entry-level role designed for a recent graduate with 0–3 years of experience, including relevant internships or co-ops. You'll start by participating in inspections, investigations, and safety programs alongside experienced team members, and progressively take on more ownership — including leading incident investigations — as you build credibility and judgment on the job. We're looking for someone with a strong technical foundation, excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and the initiative to follow an issue through to resolution — not just identify it.

Essential Responsibilities

Facility Inspections & Hazard Management

• Conducts routine safety inspections across all Lindon and Layton facilities.
• Identifies hazards, documents corrective actions, assigns accountability, and tracks items through closure.
• Addresses slips, trips, falls, material handling, and ergonomic risks.
• Supports PPE hazard assessments and compliance.
• Monitors machine guarding, Lockout/Tagout, and powered industrial truck/forklift programs.
• Manages Hazard Communication and SDS compliance.

Programs, Training & Compliance Documentation

• Maintains OSHA logs and required safety records; supports Utah OSHA compliance.
• Reviews, develops, and updates written safety programs, procedures, and SOPs.
• Coordinates employee safety training and new-hire safety orientation.
• Supports emergency action plans and facility preparedness.

Incident Investigation & Continuous Improvement

• Participates in, and progressively takes on leadership of, incident and near-miss investigations, including root-cause analysis.
• Coordinates safety committees and follow-up actions.
• Tracks and reports safety KPIs, trends, open corrective actions, and unresolved risks to HR and operating leadership.

Relationship Building

• Builds productive relationships with plant leadership and employees; influences safe behavior without becoming a "safety cop."

Additional Responsibilities

• Supports and is involved in company, department, and/or safety policies, procedures, programs, and activities.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental & Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health & Safety, Safety Management, Public Health (with an occupational/environmental health emphasis), or a closely related discipline.
• 0–3 years of experience; recent graduates with relevant internships or co-ops are encouraged to apply.
• Preferred: degree from a BCSP Qualified Academic Program, or eligibility for GSP/ASP/CSP progression.

Competencies / Skill Qualifications

• Strong technical foundation in occupational safety, environmental health, and/or industrial hygiene principles.
• Sound judgment and practical problem-solving skills — comfortable identifying a hazard, explaining the requirement and business risk, recommending a solution, and following through until it's resolved.
• Excellent communication skills and the confidence to influence plant leadership and production employees without relying on formal authority.
• Self-directed with strong initiative and follow-through; able to track and close out multiple open items across facilities.
• General industry safety knowledge is more relevant to this role than a background focused primarily on construction.
• Certifications such as GSP, OSHA 30 General Industry, ASP eligibility, and First Aid/CPR/AED are preferred but not required.
• English proficiency required.

Physical Requirements

• Work involves both office and production floor environments across multiple facilities.
• May require standing, walking, or wearing PPE in regulated areas for extended periods.
• Regular travel between Lindon and Layton facilities is required; this is a Utah-based position and relocation assistance is not available.
